Knightscope (KSCP) Revenue Jumped 228%. There’s a Catch Investors Should See

Oil prices have a way of turning a distant supply story into a Wall Street story overnight. A disruption to shipping can raise concerns about how much crude will reach buyers. News that exports are recovering can send prices in the opposite direction just as quickly. Both forces were in play this week: crude eased during Tuesday’s trading as Middle Eastern exports showed signs of recovery, but oil prices remained elevated for the month.

That is why energy stocks to watch are drawing attention again. Higher crude prices can lift revenue for companies that produce oil, but a strong oil market does not guarantee a strong day for their shares. Investors also have to consider how much each company produces, what it costs to operate, and whether higher revenue turns into cash after spending on wells, equipment and debt.

From the Oilfield to the Fuel Pump

The oil market involves several kinds of businesses, and they do not respond to rising prices in the same way. Exploration and production companies bring oil and natural gas out of the ground and sell them. Refiners buy crude and process it into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products. For a refiner, the key question is often how much it earns on those finished products after paying for crude and running its facilities. A jump in oil prices can help a producer while raising a refiner’s input costs.

There is a useful piece of trivia behind every crude-oil quote: a standard U.S. barrel contains 42 gallons. On average, U.S. refineries can turn that barrel into about 45 gallons of petroleum products because processing increases the total volume. Around 19 to 20 gallons typically become motor gasoline, while roughly 11 to 13 gallons become distillate fuel, most of which is sold as diesel. It is a reminder that the price of a barrel and the price at the pump are connected, but they are not the same calculation.

Why the Permian Basin Matters

The Permian Basin, stretching across parts of Texas and New Mexico, sits at the heart of the U.S. oil-stock story. The region produced about 6.6 million barrels of crude a day in 2025, close to half of total U.S. production. When oil prices climb, investors naturally look at companies with large operations there to see how much of the move could show up in their earnings.

Production size, however, is only part of the answer. A company can pump more oil and still disappoint investors if its costs rise too quickly. Another may produce less but generate more cash from each barrel. Trading volume and a stock’s percentage change can show where market attention is going today; recent results help explain whether that attention has a solid business case behind it.

The 10-to-1 Energy Stock Watchlist

The following ranking examines 10 NYSE- and Nasdaq-listed oil and energy stocks to watch as crude prices remain elevated. It considers direct oil-price exposure, recent operating results, trading activity and intraday share-price performance. Tuesday’s pullback makes the comparison especially useful: with most of the screened stocks trading lower, the question is which businesses appear best positioned if high oil prices persist—and which ones can hold up if crude retreats.

Our Methodology

Our ranking of the Top 10 Energy Stocks to Watch as Oil Prices Surge, considers each company’s exposure to oil prices, its latest reported operating or financial results, and its share-price change and share volume at approximately 11:51 a.m. New York time on September 29, 2026. It is not a ranking by percentage gain or volume alone, and intraday figures will change before the market closes.

10. Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC)

Intraday stock price: $389.30 | Down 0.04% | Volume: 0.64 million shares

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC) earns a place on this list because higher oil prices do more than affect companies that drill for crude. They also change the economics of turning that crude into gasoline, diesel and other fuels.

There is a catch, though. A refiner does not automatically make more money when oil rises. What matters is the difference between the cost of its crude and the prices it receives for finished products, along with operating costs and refinery output. That makes Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC) a useful stock to watch during an oil-price shock, but a different kind of trade from an oil producer.

Its shares were nearly flat in Tuesday’s snapshot, while several other energy names were falling more sharply. The company also reported substantially higher adjusted EBITDA in the second quarter of 2026 than a year earlier. Investors following Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC) should watch refining margins and fuel demand alongside the headline crude price.
