Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) lands in ninth place as one of Jim Cramer’s best-known “own it, don’t trade it” investments. That phrase has followed the consumer technology giant through several product cycles, economic slowdowns and arguments over whether the company had already become too large to deliver meaningful growth. Cramer has continued defending the stock even as investors debated whether Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) was moving too slowly in generative artificial intelligence. While other technology companies poured historic amounts of capital into data centers, advanced processors and power infrastructure, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) initially followed a more restrained and capital-light path.

Cramer has viewed that caution as a financial advantage rather than an automatic strategic weakness. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) did not immediately commit the same level of capital to AI infrastructure as some of its largest technology peers, allowing the company to protect cash flow while the industry continued debating the eventual returns from generative AI spending. Its enormous installed base gives it the ability to distribute new artificial intelligence features across the iPhone, Mac and iPad without first becoming one of the world’s biggest owners of AI data centers. Cramer reiterated his familiar position in May, arguing that investors had another opportunity to buy the stock after the company’s earnings report and repeating that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) was a company to own rather than trade.

That strategy is not without risk. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has acknowledged that component shortages, increasing semiconductor costs and limited infrastructure availability can affect its operations and financial performance. The company’s more cautious AI approach may lower immediate capital expenditures, but it may also leave it dependent on outside model developers, cloud providers and computing suppliers. That is unusual for a company known for controlling the relationship between its hardware, operating systems, processors and services. Its enormous device ecosystem remains a major competitive advantage, but investors will want proof that artificial intelligence can improve product demand, Services revenue and customer retention. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) ranks ninth because its financial strength remains difficult to dismiss, although the company must show that patience in AI was a calculated strategy and not a costly delay.
