The bullish thesis for Ormat Technologies Inc. (NYSE:ORA) rests on an established electricity business gaining two additional growth drivers—battery storage and next-generation geothermal development. That combination gives investors more to assess than a renewable energy company waiting for favorable sentiment.
On September 24, the company announced its selection for approximately $35 million in potential U.S. Department of Energy funding. The proposed awards support enhanced geothermal systems work at Dixie Valley, Nevada, and hydrothermal development at Cove Fort, Utah. Funding remains subject to award negotiations, so it should not be treated as cash already received.
The investment significance extends beyond the award’s size. Successful drilling and testing could help establish whether existing geothermal resources can support further commercial development. For an experienced operator, expanding around a known resource base could create opportunities to apply existing engineering and operating capabilities. That is a potential advantage, although commercial viability still requires demonstration.

Storage Growth Gives the Thesis a Financial Foundation
Second-quarter results provide a more immediate growth argument. Revenue increased 10.6% year over year to $258.8 million, while energy storage revenue rose 195.1% to $42.8 million. Electricity revenue increased 5.8%, giving the company growth in its established business alongside faster storage expansion.
The bullish interpretation is that a broader earnings base could reduce dependence on any single project or business line. Storage can contribute growth while geothermal development builds a longer-term pipeline. If both progress, investors may become more willing to value the company for expanding earnings capacity rather than its existing generating assets alone.
Execution remains the deciding factor. Product revenue declined, and operating income fell despite higher consolidated sales. Merchant storage pricing can also fluctuate. A convincing investment case therefore requires sustained cash generation and acceptable returns on new capital.
Third-quarter results, scheduled for November 4, offer the next checkpoint. Strong storage performance, progress on geothermal development, and better conversion of revenue into operating earnings would strengthen the case for Ormat Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: ORA) as a renewable energy growth stock.
